When assessing a MRI for a SLAP tear there are three things to look for that indicate a tear. 2 minute review of what they are.
Image above: Look for high signal at the base of the labrum that goes posterior the biceps tendon insertion. If its posterior to the biceps tendon, its a tear and not a normal variant.
Image Above: Image on left is normal for reference. Image on right high signal extends into the labrum and not just at its base. High signal should never be seen extending into the labrum and always indicates a tear.
Image Above: Coronal ( first image) and Sagittal ( second image) with reference lines. Blue arrow indicates high signal which is a tear in the biceps tendon adjacent to the labrum. High signal should not be seen in the biceps tendon.
